Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
- A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a normal local area network (LAN) that can be accessed by portable machines (ie. notebooks).
- When a wireless user requires access to the network they simply turn on their computers anytime and anywhere on campus within a specified radio coverage area.
- The popularity of wireless LANs is a testament primarily to their convenience, cost efficiency, and ease of integration with other networks and network components. The majority of computers sold to consumers today come pre-equipped with all necessary wireless LAN technology.
- Swinburne University's Wireless is capable of a 54 Mbps (megabits per second) data transmission rate, and has wireless coverage at all of its five major campuses, Hawthorn, Prahran, Lilydale, Croydon and Wantirna.
