Scaling
Steps:
Step 1 - Type of Work
The IT Project Office will assist the Business to determine the scale of all proposed IT projects. The first step in responding to a project proposal is to determine what sort of work it is.
There are three categorised types of work:
- Insignificant IT changes that do not require investigation or more than a few hours of IT development work, which can be covered by logging a job with the IT Service Desk on extension 5000;
- Small IT changes that require investigation and dedicated resources to fix, which can be covered by the Change Analysis Request (CAR) procedure. These are considered Small Works;
- IT changes that require detailed investigation and a dedicated group of resources to fix, which are considered Project work, described in further detail below.
A project is a unique set of activities that:-
- Will be undertaken between two certain dates;
- Will require the expenditure of a known (or at least estimated) amount of money;
- Will involve a team of people;
- Involves a degree of risk;
- Will deliver outputs that result in a change of some sort, and
- May never be repeated.
Project Management is a discipline intended to proceduralise an essentially one-off piece of work.
Types of Project Work
Once a request for project is received, the IT Project Office, in consultation with the Business, will determine what degree of project management rigour and governance may be required. The Swinburne PMM recognises three levels of project:
- Major projects
- Medium projects
- Minor Projects
The Work Sizing template is intended to help determine the scale of the project. The scale of the project will in turn have implications on the organisational structure required to support the project and the path through the PMM that should be followed.
